Attorney Samuel Bennett | Detroit Criminal Defense Attorney

Meet Attorney Samuel Bennett

I think the most rewarding part of being a defense attorney is multifaceted. One of the most important parts is being able to help people through an incredibly difficult time in their life. They don’t call me because things are going great — they call me because they’re struggling and having a hard time.

I really enjoy doing expungements for clients. Making sure they don’t have felonies on their record really opens up their job opportunities and their educational opportunities, and most of the time gives them a better place to live. Because with a felony, you can’t live in most apartment complexes.

Another part is drug addiction and alcohol addiction — trying to get people away from that. And we’re seeing more gambling addictions now than we’ve ever seen before. So there are a lot of rewarding aspects.

I get calls from clients two years, three years after their case telling me they’re going to college, or they graduated from college, or they got that job they wanted because their felony was taken away. And it’s just really great to hear what people have done with their lives once they leave me.

A lot of times, I don’t get to hear about that. So I really try to stay in contact with clients. I reach out to their mothers on Mother’s Day and their fathers on Father’s Day, just to make sure they know that I’m thinking about them — and that if they ever need anything, or if they want to update me about their life, I’m here for that.

I became a criminal defense attorney because I believe people deserve fairness — not judgment. My clients come to me during one of the hardest times in their lives, and my goal is simple: to guide them through it with honesty, compassion, and determination.

When you sit down with me, you’re not a case number — you’re a person. I take the time to really get to know my clients, to understand who they are and what brought them to this point. That relationship matters. It’s how I can best fight for their freedom and protect their future.

Over the years, I’ve stood beside clients in some of the most challenging and emotional cases you can imagine — from serious violent offenses and sex crime allegations to complex theft and computer-related investigations. I’ve practiced in both state and federal courts throughout Michigan, defending people whose entire lives were on the line. In every case, I bring the same focus and preparation — every detail, every piece of evidence, every strategy matters.

My approach is simple: every case starts with listening. I want to hear your story — not just what’s in the police report. From there, I build your defense around the facts, your goals, and the truth of who you are. Whether we’re fighting in court or negotiating a resolution, I make sure you’re part of every decision and that you always feel heard, informed, and supported.

I go out of my way to make every client feel like family. My younger clients especially know they have a “big brother” in their corner for as long as they need one — someone who genuinely cares about their well-being, not just their case. I see myself not only as a fighter in the courtroom, but also as a counselor — helping clients navigate the mental health or substance abuse issues that often accompany criminal cases.

Outside of work, I’m a husband and a father to two incredible kids — my 8-year-old son and 5-year-old daughter. They keep me grounded and remind me why I do what I do. Every person I represent has someone who loves them and is counting on them, and I never forget that when I step into court.
